Vennbahn Day 2 Monschau to St Vith



 Well that was a strange night - no part of the floor in the apartment was level so it felt like you had one too many to drink, especially when the lights were out!

Today we wake up to rain mist and an uphill section to get out of the valley, in waterproofs we se off after our bread and jam rolls, didn’t quite get the breakfast terminology right this morning, but managed to point and get some nice cake for tea break at 11🤣🤣

One back on the trail from where we left it yesterday we had to take a layer off as we were too warm, the rain had stopped so we were hoping it would brighten up


No more than 5 minutes down the track the rain returned and cycled onto the next shelter to done our rain kit sgsin and whilst there some warming coffee



We met. Dutch couple who were travelling to do the Camino in Spain and was taking them 4 weeks to get there (Wow)

Not far along the line we came across the velo train which looked like fun but little did the people hiring them know it was going to be all uphill! (But fun going back!)


All along the trail are information boards about the locations, and the graphics are quite entertaining, here are some from today, 






Our lunch stop was just over our half way mark and found a community bbq site. 






After lunch we see our first stretch of downhill and the first sunshine for a while, the countryside opens up and the miles pass by, the track is quite quiet and take some time out to do a spot of sunbathing ( in full waterproofs 🤣🤣)










Our day,  yes finished on an uphill push to our bike&bed hotel, well set up for cyclists - we settled in and then found a place to eat, as with most places we have stayed most restaurants are closed so choice is limited but found a great place attached to the supermarket (which was closed🤣🤣🤣)




Well it’s goodnight from us both.  Our last day tomorrow with a downhill start but an uphill finish,

We have not got lost, nor fallen off our bikes, it looks like we won’t need our waterproofs on tomorrow and looking forward to smother day on the trail 😍😍🚴🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♂️

A Bit about the Route...... 3 Days in the saddle, travelling through the countryside on one of the oldest and longest cycle trails in Europe.  The line from Aachen to Monschau was built to carry coal and iron and was opened in 1885, and the Section from Raeren to Eupen was built in 1887, and the last part opened in 1889.  After the second world war the railways industrial use declined to be completely shut down and partially dismantled by 1989. On our way

 So a 3am wake up by the alarm, meant we got away on time, only to check the maps to see that either way to Folkestone had road closures on the M25, we got to Junction 17 at 4.30am just as they cleared away the road signs, so a quick trip around the roundabout and back on to the M25, hoping that Junction 13 might also be open by the time we get there, and it was, no more traffic and then arrived ahead of schedule to Folkestone for our train. Your in luck we can get on the earlier train! Yes please was our reply, straight through passport control, didn’t really look at us either and no interrogation as to whether we had any ham sandwiches stashed away!  We just had to  wait for our boarding number, only then to be told to go straight through, so we did, straight onto yet an earlier train. Vennbahn - Day 1

 Well the day finally arrived, the sun was shining as we sorted out our bikes, set our maps, packed our panniers and off we set. First we had to circumnavigate Aarchen to reach the start of the Vennbahn, through the city centre, but at least it was a bank holiday and the roads were not busy, at a set of traffic lights, we met a Dutch couple asking if we were going to cycle the route, yes, can we follow you to the start 🇱🇺 we don’t have a map around the city, so two became four, we made it to the start. Our new friends Rita and William were to leap frog us along the route as we were all heading for Monschau for our evening stopover.
